Super Threesome in US Open Opening Act
On the eve of the US Open golf tournament, all eyes are on the three that will play the first two rounds in one group. This year, the organizers have decided to put the world’s number one, Tiger Woods together with the 24 year old Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland and the recent Masters champion, Adam Scott.
The trio will play the first two rounds of the competition – they will tee off on the first at 1.14 pm on Thursday at Merion, and the second on the 11th tee at 7.44 am on Friday morning.
All eyes will no doubt be on the second ranked Rory McIlory, who is under a lot of pressure to perform better. The wunderkind of the circuit has fallen short of expectations this season after entering 2013 as the world’s number one.
Some say that the sheer pressure of being the in top spot has impacted the youngster’s performance, while others put it down to more practical reasons such as the fact that he changed all his equipment after signing a mega deal with Nike.
While many are hoping for a head to head between Woods and McIlroy this season, it may not be a good idea to bet on it.
While McIlroy is still ahead of Adam Scott in Official World Golf Rankings (who is now third after winning his recent Masters), Scott may be his biggest threat. Scott is the only player in the field who has a chance of winning the Grand Slam this year after posting his first major championship in April at the Masters.
Speaking of playing against Tiger Woods in the same opening group, Scott said: “It will be a fun week, absolutely, some energy and electricity – playing with him at any time, there always is. And given the hype around this grouping and being a major, it’s going to be an intense couple of days.”
