Struggling Sports Betting Site Blames IT Glitch For Non Payment
Canbet, the troubled online sports betting company, is now blaming an IT glitch for non-payment to punters wanting to withdraw their money from accounts. Since late last year, Canbet customers from the United Kingdom, India, eastern Europe and Canada have been unable to gain access to their funds. It is believed that Canbet owes over $1 million to frustrated players.
Canbet’s parent company is based in Melbourne, Australia, and two of its directors are from Down Under. The group is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission.
There is general confusion regarding the true problems faced by Canbet. A message at the site reads: “Canbet is currently undergoing an upgrade! In order to keep your gaming experience at the highest of standards, we are upgrading our system.” Yet Canbet Director, Peter Lord says that there are no plans to revive the website. The director says that the company is “working on a solution” to ensure that punters get their money back. “As indicated to the customers that currently have withdrawal requests, we are making an all-out effort to ensure the necessary assets are liquidated to ensure they are paid,” he said.
As a site registered by the UK Gambling Commission, Canbet wasn’t obliged to ring its players’ funds to ensure that they were protected in case of financial woes.
One customer from the UK said that he had deposited thousands as part of a reload bonus offer but when he wanted to withdraw his winnings, he was told that a computer fault was preventing the payout. Explaining the “glitch”, director Peter Lord said: “There was human error of some sort. Either in devising a scheme that was too generous or in the site wrongly allowing bonus reloads.”
Rumors are currently circulating that Canbet is up for sale. Watch this space to see how events develop.
