Serena Williams Battles with Language in French Open Interviews

As if playing in the French Open finals is not enough to worry about for the number one seeded Serena Williams, the star has decided that this is the time to butter up her French and has been giving interviews in the language to the local media.

After each of her French Open wins this tournament, Williams has been seen giving interviews in French, probably in an attempt to butter up the crowds and gain their support.  Her efforts seem to be working because the French crowd has gone wild so far by her attempts.

“It’s way, way more nerve-racking than playing tennis,” she said.

Williams has been learning the language for quite a while now and said that she had been keen to try it out in interviews last year.  The only problem was that she had been ousted in the first round of the tournament last year and therefore hadn’t had the opportunity to give media appearances in French.

Williams will attempt to collect her 16th Grand Slam title when she faces Maria Sharapova in the French Open finals on June 8th. This is the first finals of the tournament that Williams has reached since she bagged the title in 2002.

Recalling that momentous moment, Williams said: “It doesn’t seem like that long ago, even though it was.”

Although the number two seeded Sharapova is the clear favorite to win on Saturday, nobody is signing the 31 year old Williams out just yet. She gave an incredible performance against the Italian Sara Errani in the semi finals, winning her first nine games and accumulating a staggering 40-2 discrepancy in winners during the course of the game.

Her play of late has been described as “Serena of old” when she would display an incredible range of talents on the court.  One of those, it seems, is breaking teeth on French!
