Is the UFC Fight Game and Both Boxing Dead?

Boxing has been slowly dying for a long time now, at least among the recreational type of followers. From what used to be the most popular in the United States, it’s hard to find a semi-follower who can even name anyone other than Mayweather or Pacquiao that are currently fighting. What’s the problem then? Lack of charisma in fighters.

While Mayweather is a freak in the ring, his character is what really draws the crowds. Pacquiao just has an overall sense of charisma and while he may not be technically as good as Mayweather..it…would..have been a great fight. Would have? Yes, both fighters are past their peak performance despite still being the best of the world. By the time they fight it won’t be the match everyone anticipated. A great time in boxing was lost when these two decided to wait/not fight.

After returning from another UFC event in Las Vegas it was apparent from previous fights we have gone to that the energy just wasn’t there. In what was one of the arguably most hyped up fights (thanks Sonnen) the entire card pretty much failed. People simply aren’t willing to shell out $50 bucks every couple months to see the same old fights, and the same old fighters. The fad in the US has definitely decreased, but it is not broken.

Boxing has had time to mature, you see the true creme de la crem fighting. In UFC/MMA there hasn’t been that gold rush where fathers are pushing their fighters to become elite athletes and hold a UFC belt by the time they were 5. I see the UFC sport continuing to develop with new fighters coming in to continually replace the old, making what they did look amateurish.

As a boxer myself, I will remain a fan for the rest of my life and respect how hard the fight game is. MMA is the same and while I appreciate boxing more, I’d rather have a MMA fighter next to me in a brawl.

Until new fighters come in to replenish the money hungry, dodging scene that is the fight game I predict we will continue seeing a lack of customer base in fighting.
