Boxing King Khan Marries Sweetheart in New York

Amir Khan, the British boxer who became the youngest Olympic boxing medalist and took home two world championship titles before the age of 26, has married his princess in a fairytale wedding in New York.

The Waldorf Astoria hotel was transformed into a wonderland as the groom and his 20 year old bride, Faryal Makhdoom wore traditional Pakistani costumes.  The world champion boxer was dressed in a tunic and crimson turban, while his bride’s gown was so heavily embroidered that at times it looked as if her slight figure couldn’t hold up the weight.

300 guests attended the elaborate wedding and dined on salmon, chicken, vegetables and wedding cake.

The bride and groom flew back to England on Tuesday and a wedding reception will be held for 4,000 fans and friends in Manchester on Sunday.  In attendance will be team members from Khan’s favorite teams the Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United.

“It’s time for me to get married and settle down,” said Khan. “I know Faryal will help me with my career as well.”

Khan’s last fight was in April when he beat Julio Diaz in Sheffield.  He will now take a break as he observes Ramadan through the summer months, before preparing for a world title fight in December.  Recently, Khan joked that he had to get married before the December fight while he face was still intact.

Should Khan beat his opponent, Devon Alexander for the American’s IBF world welterweight title in December, he will almost certainly meet Floyd Mayweather next Spring in a mega-millions super fight.

“Amir needs one fight at welterweight, along with a title, to set up the match with Floyd,” noted Richard Schaefer, speaking for Khan. “He is getting that chance against Devon, who has agreed the fight. We will be finalizing and signing the contracts in the next couple of weeks.”
